Welcome to an experience where our inner silence can be found; like the Biblical proph-
ets, we go to the desert, where we can slow down our inner pace and commit ourselves to
sounds otherwise muffled or unheard; our body relaxes, our thoughts scattered, fading,
ultimately gone. Welcome to our meditation workshop. My name is Noam, and I live in the
smallest town in Israel; on the highest mountain in the Negev desert; I lead group medita-
tions in the very wilderness, where prophets came to look for the sound of silence.
We are bringing African drums and other drums of various kinds, an amplification system
and two large mats to this workshop. During the workshop, participants will learn about
drum types and their place of origin, and about those
cultures in which the drum is a central tool in life. They will play drumming games that
emphasize “togetherness” - an important and significant discipline in drumming, they will
learn different types of basic rhythms and, of course, they will sing songs.
The workshop is conducted by professional instructors who are graduates of music schools.
They have held workshops and drumming circles for many years throughout the country.
The instructors have experience working with the general public, with children and espe-
cially with teenagers.
The Workshop Facilitator is Uzi Tabu who plays percussion with Oriental instruments such as
the santur, zarb, rick and daff. He is a graduate of the Musrara Center for Classical Oriental
Music and Dance in Jerusalem.
He is also a graduate of Ben Gurion University in Management and Economics. He is mar-
ried and has four children.
